She was chosen leader of Nova Scotia’s New Democratic Party in 1980, a position she held for 14 years. In 1995, she won the leadership of the federal NDP.
McDonough died at a care home Saturday after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, her family said. She was 77.
Known affectionately as simply Alexa McDonough changed the face of politics in Canada and paved the way for other women to take their places at the pinnacles of political power.
She continued to inspire generations of New Democrats, despite retiring from politics 14 years ago.
