It was only after his 24-year-old daughter Candace went missing in 2007 that Barry Shpeley realized how few recent photos he had of her. He was focused instead on his grandchildren, but now tells anyone who will listen to take as many photos of their adult children as possible.
Shpeley wondered why eight years after her disappearance, his daughter was not listed on the RCMP’s national public website.
The fifth estate looked into this.
It is not the RCMP but the local police jurisdictions handling missing persons cases that determine if they want a profile to be featured on the website, the RCMP says.
Shortly after Shpeley’s disappearance, her file was turned over to the B.C. Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) in the area on May 10, 2007.
The IHIT is a combined task force that brings together the RCMP and two municipal police forces.
In an email to the fifth estate, the IHIT said they are not treating Shpeley’s disappearance as a missing person investigation but rather as a murder investigation.
In 2011, police stated publicly that a man who died in prison while serving an unrelated manslaughter conviction was “a person of interest” in the Shpeley case.
But Candace’s father Barry says he is still waiting for answers to what happened to his daughter, who left behind two young daughters and a son.
