as posted by the channelIn a 1982 special episode of the fifth estate, Bob McKeown examined the relationship between Janise Gamble and her abusive husband John Gamble, and her culpability in a series of sensational events in Calgary in 1976 involving robbery, a murder and hostage taking. Janise and her co-defendant, Billy Nicholls, claimed that she had no foreknowledge of the bank robbery that quickly led to the murder of Sgt. Allan Keith Harrison and a subsequent hostage taking. John Gamble, out on bail for the murder of Dominic (Nick) Molinaro, committed suicide at their final stake-out, leaving Janise and Nicholls on the hook. Nicholls’ trial was the first to substitute a longer prison sentence for the death penalty. He and Janise Gamble were both sentenced to the new term of a mandatory minimum of 25 years without parole. Janise Gamble tells us the story she never told the court from inside prison 7 years into her sentence. A Montreal lawyer named Colin Irving saw Janise Gamble’s story on the fifth estate and decided to take up her cause. He eventually helped secure her release in after 14 years.
