Why does the news media have a blind spot when it comes to covering Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is still recovering from Hurricane Maria that hit last year. Now comes word that the death toll is estimated to be several times higher than the official number. So why can't the story get into the headlines? American journalist of Puerto Rican descent, Julio Ricardo Valera, says colonialism is at the root of the answer.
