How police busted criminals on an encrypted Canadian phone network | The Fifth Estate

Vancouver’s Sky Global promised privacy to customers with its encrypted cell phones, Sky ECC, which were a hit with the criminal underworld, arms dealers and drug traffickers. But after police cracked the code and unlocked thousands of messages between criminals, the phones became the target of an international police sting. Police watched as criminals freely sent each other text messages and pictures of piles of money, drugs, weapons and even kidnappings.

CBC’s The Fifth Estate goes behind the scenes of the controversial police operation that brought down thousands of criminals – and Sky ECC.
