Globally, more than 50,000 women and girls were killed in 2023 by an intimate partner or family member, according to two UN agencies on Monday, in a report that coincides with International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Raphaelle Rafin, a policy specialist with UN Women, says violence against women is a ‘systemic issue’ and that the murders are 'often brutal.'

Also, in Canada, the Ontario NDP called on the provincial government to declare an epidemic of intimate partner violence.

For anyone affected by family or intimate partner violence, there is support available through crisis lines and local support services. If you’re in immediate danger or fear for your safety or that of others around you, please call 911.
