Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Ottawa has earmarked $11 billion for six new icebreakers in partnership with Quebec-based shipbuilder, Chantier Davie.

The new fleet, which is expected to be ready by 2036, will replace the Coast Guard’s aging batch of heavy and medium ice breaker ships. Carney said the investment will help to protect Canada's sovereignty by ensuring the world’s largest coastline remains clear to traverse amid a trade war with the United States.
