ON THIS DAY: Oct. 19, 1987 — The stock market crashed, causing the first contemporary global financial crisis, otherwise known as “Black Monday." A wave of selling that started in Hong Kong slammed U.S. markets and pushed the Dow Jones Industrial index down 22.6%. It marked the sharpest market downturn in the nation since the Great Depression.
