“Over the weekend, actor George Clooney held a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton at his home, and Bernie Sanders supporters expressed their opinion by throwing dollar bills at Hillary’s motorcade as it drove up to the party. On CNN’s New Day Monday morning, co-anchor Brooke Baldwin called out the rather unmistakable imagery, asking Clinton surrogate Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) if he read anything more into the scene. Rangel begged off, but Baldwin clearly saw what was clearly there:
The imagery Baldwin is referring to is the practice of “making it rain,” the custom of converting your cash into as many single dollar bills as you can and showering them on erotic dancers at a strip club. The use of single dollar bills increases the visual impact of the display.
Consciously or not, these Sanders supporters evoked that sort of imagery with their demonstration, especially on the heels of a controversy in which a speaker at one of Sanders’ rallies referred to Hillary Clinton and other elected Democrats as “Democratic whores.”
