6:42Now PlayingA new study suggests teens are crippled by the fear of missing out, or FOMO. This drives more social media usage. Brett Erlich and Grace Baldridge (Pop Trigger), hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Teens are stressed out because of social media, and they’re self-medicating with … more social media. As part of a CNN special report called #Being13: Inside the Secret World of Teens, researchers from the University of Texas and the University of California analyzed how eighth-grade students used social media. And it’s pretty clear that it’s in control of their social lives.
We already knew that about half of teens feel addicted to their cell phone, but now, from the mouths of babes, we know exactly why: FOMO, or a fear of missing out, in both their online and IRL realms.
Their overwhelming fear is that being off social media will cause them to miss out on something. Most 13-year-olds surveyed reported a frequent desire to check in on their social media accounts, even if they didn’t plan on posting anything. Fifty-seven percent admitted to checking their social media to “lurk” rather than post at least six times per day, with some stating that they checked over 100 times per day.”*
