"The attorneys for the Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Philando Castile say the cop’s charges should be dropped — in part, because Castile smoked pot. A memo filed Wednesday says Castile was a regular marijuana user who died with high levels of THC, the drug’s chemical component, in his system. The memo says Castile was driving while stoned when St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez pulled him over, leading to their deadly encounter.
It says Castile, 32, was “culpably negligent and was the substantial cause of his own demise.”
Yanez was charged last month with manslaughter. He says he shot Castile in self-defense.
The officer pulled over Castile in a morning traffic stop, and later said he incorrectly believed Castile resembled a robbery suspect.
Castile told the cop he had a gun, and a valid permit to carry it. Yanez said he fired seven rounds after Castile seemed to reached for the weapon.The shots rang out with Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, in the passenger seat — and her 4-year-old daughter in the backseat. Reynolds streamed her boyfriend’s final moments on Facebook Live."*
