“Most years, Democrats have little hope of winning the 32nd Senate District seat, one of the most conservative districts in Connecticut.
But this isn't just any year.
Bolstered by newly energized liberal activists who have become politically involved out of anger at President Donald Trump, Democrats say they hope to pull off an unlikely win in Tuesday's special election to fill the vacant seat. "We're very encouraged by the outpouring of support from Democrats across the state who are absolutely disgusted by what they're seeing from Trump and the Republicans in Washington," said Leigh Appleby, spokesman for the Connecticut Democratic Party. "We're encouraged by the grassroots energy we're seeing."
Because it is one of two contests that could determine which party controls the Senate, the race between Democrat Greg Cava and Republican Eric Berthel has gained a national profile and drawn the attention of big money PACs supporting both candidates.
"Hundreds of people from across the country are phone-banking,'' said Lisa Thomas, a former town council member from Coventry now serving as state coordinator for Code Blue, formed the day after Trump was elected to help Democrats win on the state and local levels. The group, along with Action Together Connecticut, another coalition of progressive activists, is bringing in volunteers from surrounding states and tapping into phone banks from Massachusetts to California to help Cava.
They are also sending money: Wolf PAC, a political action committee based in Los Angeles, has invested more than $40,000 in the race, primarily to pay for leaflets promoting Cava.
Republicans are taking the threat seriously. Grow Connecticut, an independent group, is spending about $10,000 on mobile ads reminding Republican voters to vote on Tuesday. Special elections are notoriously unpredictable; meager turnout, bad weather and a host of other factors could swing the results.”*
