"President Trump's anti-abortion executive order cut billions of dollars to both family planning organizations and health efforts across the globe. Health workers are preparing for the impact, calling the effects potentially decimating for numerous organizations, but now it could get worse. The Daily Beast reports Trump may be considering an executive order to eliminate funding for any United Nations organization that promoted abortion in any way.
According to The Daily Beast, there's a draft order that sets up a review process for all American funding to the UN, automatically eliminating some contributions. The order would review or cut contributions to any organizations that promote “the performance of abortion or sterilization as a method of family planning.” According to the New York Times, the move is part of a Trump campaign promise to withdraw from international organizations.
As it stands, Trump already signed an order that would pull $9.5 billion from health organizations on the basis of abortion that will not only impact women's health, but could cause the rollback in progress on essential initiatives like HIV/AIDs prevention. This draft order would even further expand that order. More specifically, the new order would put the United Nations Population Fund up for review, and organization that's mission according to The Daily Beast is “a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.” It also fights child marriage, female genital mutilation, and maternal death.”*
