10:27Now PlayingJim Johnson wants to fix the broken criminal justice system of New Jersey. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Johnson’s plan would protect New Jerseyans on what he called five “fronts:” the “rule of law” or legal system, immigrant rights, healthcare, the environment, and economic equality.
To combat what he called “attacks” on the rule of law, Johnson vowed to support reforming the criminal justice system and appoint an attorney general and state judges who would support that reform.
He welcomed confrontation with U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, having dealt with him during the Clinton Administration.
“I know what that’s like, and I’m prepared to fight back,” he said.
On the immigration front, he vowed to create a state Immigration Council to ensure immigrants have legal representation via attorney pro bono services.
To improve quality of life, he would increase the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour, as well as seek legislation for paid family leave and affordable childcare. In addition, he favored passage of a millionaire’s tax to help pay for universal p.re-K.
Johnson also supported a Medicare-for-all single payer system if the Affordable Care Act is repealed, and ensure Planned Parenthood and other family planning providers are funded.”*
