"The White House’s commission to combat the opioid epidemic could clash with President Trump’s proposed cuts to Medicaid.
Various experts at the White House’s first panel on opioids Friday expressed concerns that any cuts to former President Obama’s Medicaid expansion program could create a major roadblock in the fight against opioid abuse.
“Medicaid is the largest national payer for addiction and mental health treatment,” Dr. Joseph Parks said, according to reports.
“The Medicaid expansion must be maintained and completed,” he continued.
The conflict comes as Republicans scramble to put together an ObamaCare repeal bill that is able to pass through the Senate.
Trump’s budget proposes to cut Medicaid spending by $610 billion over ten years. That is in addition to $800 billion proposed cuts under the GOP American Health Care Act.
More than 1,000 people each day are treated for not using prescriptions opioids as directed, according to the CDC.”*
