"Fresh off his appearance on Sunday’s edition of “Meet the Press,” Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson penned an op-ed in The New York Times further explaining why the American Health Care Act, as it’s currently written, is bad for the country. Namely, it still does too much to protect people with preexisting conditions and uses too much government money to keep people from dying.
Johnson puts a ton of faith in the idea that the free market will solve all our healthcare problems, which it will not. “The primary goals of any health care reform should be to restrain (if not lower) costs while improving quality, access and innovation,” Johnson wrote. “This is exactly what consumer-driven, free-market competition does in other areas of our economy.”
Johnson spent a lot of column inches harping on the idea that the solution should be to loosen restrictions and deregulate the insurance industry, which will somehow benefit the population as a whole and not insurance and pharmaceutical companies. It’s not like we’ve ever seen either of these industries artificially inflate costs of life-saving medication for no reason other than massive profits, right?”*
