“In the midst of Donald Trump’s storied hurricane relief visit to Puerto Rico, during which he told victims that Maria wasn’t “a real catastrophe like Katrina,” he spoke to a group of hurricane victims, and then shot rolls of paper towels into the crowd as if wielding a t-shirt cannon at a baseball game.
It was, to put it mildly, not the ideal response to situation in which thousands are without drinking water, food, electricity, and medical help. In an interview with former Arkanas Governor Mike Huckabee (and father of his press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders) for Christian television network Trinity Broadcasting, Trump defended the paper towel throwing, saying that the people gathered there “were screaming and they were loving everything.”
“They had these beautiful, soft towels,” Trump said. “Very good towels. And I came in and there was a crowd of a lot of people. And they were screaming and they were loving everything. I was having fun, they were having fun. They said, ‘Throw ‘em to me! Throw ‘em to me, Mr. President!’ So next day they said, ‘Oh it was so disrespectful to the people.’ It was just a made-up thing. And also when I walked in, the cheering was incredible.”
