“Back in September, with emergency funding for the hurricane-ravaged cities of Houston and Tampa on the table, Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi were summoned to the White House for what they assumed would be a run-of-the-mill meeting with Donald Trump and Congressional Republican leaders over Chinese food. Yet by the end of the meeting, the president had unexpectedly abandoned his Republican allies to side with “Chuck and Nancy,” promising to shore up protections for immigrants who qualify for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in return for a three-month extension of the debt ceiling. Republicans had been hoping for an extension twice that long, and the president’s mid-negotiation change of heart prompted a round of bipartisan head-scratching. “The president of the United States just handed a loaded gun to Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer,” a senior G.O.P. aide complained to Politico at the time.”*
