"In the wake of yesterday's shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High, some conservatives have adopted one of the ugliest tactics imaginable: Blaming the victims. The shooting in Parkland, Florida, is one of the deadliest in recorded history. The alleged shooter, Nikolas Cruz, has been charged with killing 17 people. In the wake of the tragedy, conservatives seem to be pointing the blame at the people whose consciousness we should be desperate to clear: The children who survived the attack.

“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior,” President Trump tweeted in response to the crisis. “Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!”
In a now-deleted tweet, conservative YouTube creep Mark Dice chided victims for posting about the incident on social media: “Someone want to tell the Generation Z kids that in the event of a school shooting, they should call 911 instead of posting video of it on Snapchat. Parkland. Florida,” he wrote. Elsewhere, Dice repudiated calls for better gun control, tweeting,“ [We] don't have a gun problem in America. We have a mental health problem.””*
