“Community groups want to know why the Border Patrol is releasing so many migrant families in Yuma, creating a state of emergency, while bed spaces at migrant shelters in Phoenix go empty.
Earlier in April, Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls declared a state of emergency to deal with a flood of migrant families suddenly being released there by the Border Patrol.
But in Phoenix, community groups say they have seen a significant decrease in the number of migrant families being released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Border Patrol and ICE are both part of the Department of Homeland Security.
Since October, the Border Patrol had been transferring migrant families detained in Yuma to ICE, which then transported them to Phoenix.
There, ICE released migrants at local churches because of a lack detention space as well as laws and court rulings that prevent the federal government from holding migrant families that ask for asylum for more than 20 days.
But at the end of March, the arrangement suddenly changed when the Border Patrol apparently began transferring fewer migrant families to ICE custody and instead began releasing large numbers of migrant families in Yuma.”
