The New York Times has acquired partial tax records from 1995, suggesting that Mr Trump declared a $916 million loss on some of his businesses in that tax year.
Under US tax law, such massive losses could be off-set against personal taxes due over an 18-year period, possibly enabling him legally to avoid paying any federal taxes throughout that period.
