The detection dogs are able to notice tiny changes in smell caused by cancers, malaria and Parkinson's disease.
Early results have been so impressive that the NHS has granted permission for a clinical trial into detection dogs which could see them one day become a normal part of medical diagnosis - but critics say more evidence is needed and the costs are still too high.
