But what actually happens to our brains when we play, what is it that keeps us playing and why is Fortnite so popular?

Fortnite Battle Royale uses psychological tools such as uncertain rewards, dopamine and flow theory to give players an experience which their brains constantly want more of. It has led to some gamers playing hours at a time, and some have even experienced ‘Fortnite addiction’, similar to gaming addiction which was recently classed as a mental illness by the World Health Organisation and the NHS. But some experts say it's unfair to blame games like Fortnite as the cause of the addiction, because there are often other underlying problems.
