On the first day of an unprecedented court case, the lawyer for those campaigning against Mr Johnson's decision told the Supreme Court that he was abusing his powers to avoid parliamentary scrutiny over Brexit.
The government's lawyer told the court that it was a purely political decision and it was wrong for the courts to interfere.
