An activist has been shot in the chest at point-blank range by police as tens of thousands of demonstrators defied a protest ban on the 70th anniversary of Chinese Communist rule.
It is the first time in nearly four months of demonstrations in Hong Kong that police have hit a protester with live rounds. They also cancelled the usual fireworks display in the harbour.
The contrast could not have been greater with the Chinese capital Beijing, where the birthday party turned into a lavish display of pomp, circumstance and power.
