China is flexing its military muscle. Its forces are carrying out exercises right on the border of Taiwan. That’s not that unusual - China has carried out similar drills before, but now they're more frequent and getting closer to Taiwan itself.
Is China is about to invade? And if it does, will the US come to Taiwan's aid, and could Taiwan be about to become the next Ukraine?
According to archaeological evidence, Taiwan was originally inhabited entirely by Austronesians who trace their cultural links to the islands to the south and east. When the Dutch set up their small colonial operations in southern Taiwan in the early 17th century, occupying a tiny area, there was little Chinese presence on the island.
