Yoon Suk Yeol accused the country's main opposition party of sympathising with North Korea and says this is "to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people."
Martial law is when military authorities take control - usually temporarily - and it was the first time it's been declared since the country's military dictatorship ended in the late 80s.
