A 'risk to life' alert came into effect at one o'clock this morning in parts of Wales and south-west England with yellow and amber warnings in place for much of the UK.
A van driver was killed by a falling tree on a dual carriageway near Longton in Lancashire.
Gusts of up to 93 miles per hour were recorded in Capel Curig in North Wales. And 92 miles per hour in Aberdaron on the Llyn Peninsula.
The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool was called off, along with other sports fixtures.
And there are amber and yellow warnings in place into this evening and through tomorrow for much of the UK.
