But it's Ukraine's mineral reserves that have unexpectedly become key to the negotiations. The country has major deposits of Graphite, Lithium, Titanium and so called "rare earths" - much of them beneath areas of land now controlled by the Russians.
President Trump is said to be claiming that Ukraine should relinquish half these valuable resources as compensation for the American military aid.
