Mr Mahdawi, a Palestinian green-card holder, had been held for a fortnight.
Last summer Columbia was one of a number of university campuses embroiled in protests and encampments over the war in Gaza.
While some institutions like Harvard have resisted White House demands to change their teaching and crack down on dissent - Columbia has complied. And that's alarmed some academics.
