Kenyan police have fired tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators across the country who are marking the 35th anniversary of Saba Saba. The annual rally marks the historic protest that helped push for Kenya’s multiparty democracy on 7 July 1990.
This is the latest in youth-led protests since June 2024 against police brutality and the economic crisis.
In a statement published ahead of the protests, Kenya’s National Police Service said they would “ensure public safety and national security.”
