The government said he was sacked because the leaked emails showing he had urged Jeffrey Epstein to challenge his sentence for underage sex offences were "new information", unavailable at the time of his appointment.
But many in the Labour Party as well as the opposition say that the Prime Minister had plenty of information about Lord Mandelson's close relationship with Epstein before he sent him to Washington in February.
