The document dump reveals how Lord Mandelson had plenty to say about the prime minister who gave him the plum role as US ambassador, despite his friendship with the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
In one message, the disgraced peer said Keir Starmer presided over a "beleaguered and bereft government" that no one in Number 10 seemed to know what he wanted.
On himself though, Lord Mandelson was more flattering, writing in a handwritten note to the then foreign secretary about the ambassador post "if you're minded to appoint me, you will never regret it."
