At least 19 people have been killed and more than 100 injured, according to local authorities.
Buildings and roofs collapsed in several areas, including on Mindanao Island, where students had gathered outside a school. No injuries were reported at the school.
The earthquake also triggered tsunami warnings across the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan.
