The comparison to the first part of the epic poem - written by Dante Alighieri and charting a fictional journey through hell - comes as France, Spain and Greece continue to battle major wildfires that have burned hundreds of thousands of hectares this summer and led to more than 200,000 evacuations.
Wildfires are becoming more frequent, more intense and lasting longer, particularly in Europe due to climate change.
