The Hawk Fire began Saturday and has since grown to more than 13,000 acres - an area around half the city of Manchester.
Authorities expanded the “GO NOW” evacuation zone to the edge of the University of Nevada, warning that shifting winds were making the fire more unpredictable.
Some 42,000 residents have been ordered to leave their homes, with an additional 45,000 located in a warning zone and encouraged to evacuate.
Nevada’s governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilised the National Guard.
Officials have not said whether they believe the fire was started intentionally or accidentally.
