2015 Election: Nigerian Voters Still Need Civic Education - Agala Prt 3

A Nigerian lawyer, Mr Babatunde Agala, says massive civic education of voters in Nigeria is imperative ahead of the 2015 general elections to ensure that people will not sell their votes.

Giving his opinion on Tuesday on the outcome of the Osun State governorship election held on Saturday and the the changes needed to be made in the electoral process before the 2015 elections, Mr Agala said that adequate education of voters would make politicians focus more on issues which voters would want them to address.

He said that the 'stomach infrastructure' axiom that refers to sale of votes for food material or money must be ended in order for democracy to grow in Nigeria.

"Embark on massive civic education of Nigerians ahead of the 2015 elections. People should not sell their votes.

"They should be told why they should prefer a democratically elected government. If we have been doing that, campaigns would be issues based.

"I feel very insulted when I hear people say that in Nigeria what determines election is 'stomach infrastructure'. It means we are a hungry, uninformed and unprincipled people," the member of the APC and a former Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary at the Lagos State House of Assembly said.
