8:42Now PlayingThe bill to regulate and control the production, manufacture sales and advertising of tobacco products in Nigeria is attempting another legislative trip through the National Assembly.
The Bill was passed in the 6th Senate and sent to the President for assent, but that never happened.
According to the sponsor of the Bill, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, if passed into law, the Bill will among other things, prevent and reduce the accessibility of tobacco products to young people.
"Tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke causes death, disease and disability. The content contained in and the smoke produced from tobacco and tobacco products are toxic, which causes adverse health, mental retardation for children," he said.
The Bill was thrown open and some lawmakers supported the Bill and called for its passage.
They stressed that it was in the interest of the health of the citizens that they are supporting the restriction.
