10:29Now PlayingNigerian prisons have been described as "human cages" by some people with no facilities for correction, reformation and vocational training.
Imprisonment was hitherto custodial and not punitive.
Inmates were not harshly treated. They were well fed and escapees were few.
But all that has changed now. The current state of facilities and operations behind the walls are in deplorable state.
Whether the congestion is due to those awaiting trial or convicts, the fact is that the prisons are harbouring far more than their installed capacity, a major cause of jail break.
The burden of proof in criminal trials rest on the prosecution.
However, in the face of worsening conditions of the inmates, it is time to consider a total overhaul of the penal system.
Has the penal system failed us?
Are our prisons reform centres or just breeding ground for criminals?
How do we come out of all of these and realise a sustainable prison system? What is the way forward?
