Sunrise Daily: Police Give Complaint Unit's Access Lines -- 17/11/15 Prt 2

The Officer in Charge, Police Compliant Unit, Yomi Shogunle, gives the police’s phone numbers, and other means the public could reach the force to make complaints about just anything, including reporting police officers that have gone against the norm.

Explaining why the police had come up with the initiative, he said that “in most cases, citizens do not know much about people living around them.

"We have seen instances where landlord does not even know their tenants.

"It is important to know your next door neighbour and this is not really good," he said.

Mr Shogunle further explained that every citizen was directly or indirectly involved in policing activity, stressing that the Complaint Response Unit was created to give citizens an avenue to have a closer tie with the Nigeria Police Force.

He referred to the complaint response service as a customer service initiative by the police boss to hear from the citizens whom they serve.

He, however, stated that most complaints that Nigerians give about the police were historical complaints - situations that may have happened in the past.

On how fast the police will respond to distress calls, he said that as soon as calls are made to report incidents to the police, the police will be there in real time.

"Meeting the criminal at the scene is what I consider to be real time, before further damage is done," he explained.

On the mind-set of police officers, he said that the police had realised an attitudinal change in the conduct of police officers.

He further urged Nigerians to make use of the service to help reduce crime rate.
