Art House: The Wedding Blues; A Performance At Freedom Park

The wedding blues by Joy Isi Bewaji’s graces the stage at Freedom Park, Lagos.

It parades an amazing cast of thespians who use this limited space to give visual interpretation to the play, wedding blues which is a contemporary social satire about marriage set in commercial hub of Lagos.

It is an almost comic tale of the exaggerations of African marriages, where the women are expected to make as many sacrifices to keep a man happy

It conveys an authentic message that questions the social prejudices influencing marriages and how tradition has effectively distributed gender roles.

So the protagonist, a young and upwardly-mobile Lagos lady becomes trapped in a world that desperately tries to manipulate her happiness and choices as a woman.

She probes cultural, social and religious set rules that have shaped many marriages which are appear overrated but for her, there seems to be no room to escape.

Unwelcome persuasion from family and expectations from the society forces her to become the wife and she has no clue how to begin what seems like a daunting task.

The cast admit this project was an incredible experience.

And for the playwright, Joe Isi Bewaji this is familiar territory as she has been using her art to give women a voice.

And they have been other voices encouraging women to stop sitting on the sidelines, play more roles in the decision making process and support each other in the school of life.
