Globally, around 13.2 percent of food produced is lost between harvest and retail, while an estimated 19 percent of total global food production is wasted in households, in the food service and in retail all together.

As at july 2024, food inflation rose to about 40%; triggering what has been described as severe hunger crises in the country.

Amidst the food insecurity in nigeria, post-harvest loss accounts for about 30% to 50% of crops, especially fruits, vegetables, and other tuber crops.
