Why? So that her son can land a job in China's government.
Why do overseas mainland Chinese have such a big tie to China? Even as they enjoy the freedom of the US, do they still want to reap the benefits back home? Is it simply a family tie or something more?
This may all be changing, and becoming more dangerous. China arrested a chairwoman from a top immigration agency in Shanghai. Police are asking them to turn in decades of files on people who have immigrated to the US.
That's an attempt to coerce those overseas. And potentially...turning them into spies.
