0:48Now PlayingA Columbia University student was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and had his green card revoked by the Trump administration. Mahmoud Khalil is a graduate student who served as the lead negotiator for the pro-Palestinian encampments that took place on the college’s campus last spring. Khalil’s attorney said that federal immigration officers detained the man on Saturday night at his university apartment. He is Syrian-born and was in America on temporary status. He’s now in ICE detention in Louisiana.
The State Department said, “this should serve as a warning to foreign students on temporary status in America — under this administration, if you support terror groups, we will deport you.”
The problem for the State Dept. is that a federal judge temporarily blocked the deportation of Khalil. The ACLU and Khalil’s lawyers are likely going to argue that this is a violation of Khalil’s free speech rights.
