Wikipedia has an internal conflict ongoing called as “edit wars,” where articles related to the Gaza war are being edited by pro-Israel and pro-Hamas groups to influence the content with bias. This has led to at least 14 editors getting banned.
This is to be expected when you’re dealing with volunteer editors online, this doesn’t shock me. Where the real drama lies is that the two co-founders of Wikipedia — Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales aren’t in agreement on whether to expose these editors for their wrongdoings. Jimmy Wales wants to stand by the company’s tradition of keeping editors anonymous, whereas Larry Sanger wants to reveal the identities of the Wikipedia editors in question.
Feel free to drop your thoughts on this — but if you use the internet there is no anonymity. Just because Wikipedia doesn’t out these editors doesn’t mean that other people won’t figure it out.
