New research shows a dramatic decline in the number of college students identifying as non-binary or transgender between 2023 and 2025. Studies found that identification peaked around 7–9% in 2023 — but in 2025, that number dropped to roughly 3.6%. At the same time, rates of depression and anxiety among students have also declined. Correlation doesn’t always mean causation, but the timing raises big questions: has the cultural push around gender identity slowed, or are students simply feeling more grounded? Either way, it’s a trend worth watching.
