$3,500 For TRAFFIC CONES?!

$3,500 for traffic cones. This post is going viral, here’s what’s true. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is doing construction on the Braga Bridge. According to public records requests, the Transportation Dept. estimated that it should cost $25 per traffic cone amounting to a $10,000 budget for cones.

The state then contracted Coviello electric and in the contract, it says that each traffic cone costs $3,500 amounting to $1.4 MILLION for traffic cones.

The reality is that the contractor requires a three-man crew for the set up and removal of these cones and traffic management equipment, which is approximately $3,000 per shift. But instead of billing the government for individual work and equipment, they lumped everything together and charged the government $3,500 per traffic cone.

Stick with me here — when you fill out an expense report at work, do you lump everything together? Do you just hand your boss a report that says “$1,200” for “trip”? Or do you have to itemize everything because your company needs records of what you spent money on?

Oh, you have to be respectful with your company’s finances? Same goes for taxpayer funds. This is the kind of waste, fraud, and abuse that people are upset about — government’s require transparency to gain the trust of the people. Allotting $1.4M for traffic cones is not transparent.
