Now it’s pretty much expected that big storms might result in power outages, but with big storms like Sandy happening more frequently and climate change exacerbating storm surges, power outages are going to be more frequent and more widespread. Electricity is essential the rescue effort, for repairing and rebuilding after a major storm. Many of the buildings in lower Manhattan remained flooded for days because there was no power for the pumps. So what can be done to make a city’s electrical infrastructure more resilient in the face of more powerful and more frequent storms? How would New York fare if another Sandy made landfall today?
