Michael Dubin founded Dollar Shave Club subscription service in 2011 to provide consumers with affordable razors, and in 2016, personal care products giant Unilever bought the company for a reported $1 billion.

But that hasn't slowed Dubin down. "I think I'm working harder now than I ever have, really," he tells CNBC Make It in late 2018.

Dubin still serves as CEO, and currently has 4 million members. The company has had to "do things right consistently, every year," to reach the level of success it has, Dubin says.

That work ethic comes mainly from his mother, Nancy: "I get a lot of my business sense and my consumer savvy from my mother," Dubin tells CNBC Make It. "And I get a lot of stuff from my dad too, but it's different."

For example, when Dubin and his sister were kids, on snow days home from school, Nancy would make them do math problems while their classmates were out playing.

"They hated it," Nancy previously told CNBC. "And I said, 'Well, it didn't hurt you any.'" (Maybe that's why the first thing he splurged on after selling the business was a car for his mom.)

To balance his busy professional life, Dubin says he makes sure to take vacations. "It's really important. I didn't take a lot of vacation in the first few years [of the business], but it's important to get away and get some perspective and rest and come back and you are obviously more effective."

He also meditates. "Every day … twice a day. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon," he says. "After my meditation, I'm calmer, I'm more focused and I've got more energy."
