At its Build developer conference on Tuesday, Microsoft announced MAI-Code-1-Flash, its inaugural model in the AI coding space.

The company's primary role in the AI boom to date has been as a provider of cloud infrastructure and services and as an investor. But now, Microsoft is trying to establish a presence with proprietary models to compete with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
